Established in 2001 as a shared initiative among the Samburu, Rendile, and Turkana communities, the conservancy was born from the need to foster peace and collaboration in an area historically marked by ethnic rivalry. Spanning over 340,000 hectares, Sera Conservancy is now a sanctuary where both wildlife and local livelihoods thrive.
At the core of Sera is the Sera Rhino Sanctuary, East Africa’s first community-owned rhino conservancy. This secure, 10,700-hectare sanctuary was established in 2015 to reintroduce the critically endangered black rhino to Northern Kenya, a region from which they had disappeared due to rampant poaching. The sanctuary began with ten black rhinos, and through dedicated conservation efforts, the population has grown significantly, with 10 black rhino calves born and the recent addition of five white rhinos, making Sera a vital refuge for these magnificent creatures.
