World environment day

At Saruni Basecamp, we are deeply committed to preserving the delicate ecosystems in which we operate. As we observe World Environment Day on June 5th, we proudly highlight our safari journeys, which not only offer unforgettable wildlife experiences in Masai Mara and Samburu but also serve as a catalyst for proactive environmental preservation. This year’s theme, ” Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience,” resonates deeply with us as it aligns perfectly with our ongoing initiatives to restore and protect the unique landscapes of Kenya.

Tree Planting in Talek, Masai Mara

One of our flagship conservation efforts is our tree planting project in Masai Mara. This initiative is part of our broader strategy to engage local communities and guests in sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet.

The Talek area, which serves as a crucial gateway to the Masai Mara National Reserve, has been dealing with environmental challenges caused by human activities and climate change. In response, we started a tree planting project in 1998 at Basecamp Masai Mara with the goal of reforesting degraded land and creating green corridors for wildlife. Through this initiative, we have planted over 300,000 indigenous trees of 80 different species. As a result, the Talek region has been transformed from arid to a microclimate with increased rainfall and surface water, leading to a boost in birdlife and smaller wildlife populations.

Our tree planting activities provide educational experiences, allowing guests to learn about the importance of trees in ecosystems, the role of reforestation in combating climate change, and methods for caring for young trees to ensure their survival. These hands-on activities aim to cultivate a stronger connection between our guests and the environment.

Supporting the Seedball Project: Greening the Masai Mara and Samburu

Another highlight of our environmental efforts is our partnership with Seedball Kenya on the seedball project. This innovative initiative aims to restore degraded landscapes by dispersing seedballs—seeds encased in a protective mixture of charcoal dust and nutritious binders—across vast areas of land. These seedballs are scattered across the Masai Mara and Samburu, where they have a higher chance of germinating and growing into thriving plants. Our guests can purchase the seedballs at a nominal fee and plant them under our guidance during their safaris, making their safaris in Kenya not only memorable but also impactful.

Since the inception of our partnership, we have distributed thousands of seedballs across these regions. Our efforts have started to show promising results, with new growth beginning to transform the once-barren areas into budding green spaces. This reforestation effort is crucial in restoring habitats for wildlife and maintaining the ecological balance.
